Layout

Postby surrealmagnum on Sun Aug 02, 2009 1:13 pm

I can't help to notice that this forum's current layout isn't very lively. It's not that hard to make an original design.

A new layout would make this place more inviting; add wolves or something as a background, and make it so that the general appearance of everything matches.

Finally! Thank you, EM (whoever you are.)

But, really, has anyone ever considered redecorating?

Unfortunately, that's Wolf's responsibility. I don't know that the other admins have the power to do that.

They might, but that doesn't mean they are allowed to. It's Wolf's site when it comes down to it.

We used to have a wolf print background. I liked it. Might be interesting to have a little redecorating every once in a blue moon.

Heh, I'd forgotten about the wolf prints. That was a long time ago, Lefi.

Yeah, it was.

I ran across a site a few weeks ago that was using that background and I got all sentimental. xD

Besides, I have a print out of a post I wrote way back when that has them.

Shar, that's cause you've lived here for forever. <3

One reason I like a simply layout such as this is because, even on a fast internet connection, it's quick to load.

On an admin's point of view, less images means less bandwidth used when people load the page. Even if caching is set on a client's computer, thousands of people daily load the site (this includes bots and such) and that will eat up bandwidth.

I'm sure most hosting sites though provide more than enough bandwidth to easily cover it though, but hey, ya never know....

...well, I could find out, but meh, not really concerned about it...

Whereas usually they go slower on fast connexions.

Also, background patterns are usually a tiny image that just displays a few hundred times to cover the bg. Unless you had dial up and your dial up was shaped, you shouldn't have problems with that.

Even little things, such as changing the Image Image icons to something like pawprints (though, imho, that's a little cliché) could help spruce the place up without having to redo the entire layout, and icons don't take up that much bandwidth if executed properly...

...though, personally, I think the board is fine as it is (though I do think it would be nice to have the pawprint background back).

With most sites, having Theme packs are usually the best option, so that way users can choose whether they want to stick with a simple layout or go with something complex.

I know PHPBB supports this. I'm not sure if the Front of the website does or not.

as GTX says we can use templates - the front of the site is running joomla - we could use a joomla template to change the look of the entire site or we can use a phpbb3 template to change just the look of the forum.

joomla templates

and if you google "phpbb3 templates" you'll get lots of hits.

it's possible, just takes time and effort to find something and then customize it.
