Unfortunately guys, it's an awful sad fact that people *hate* wolves-and if you haven't noticed-even reintroducing them has been a hard fought uphill battle.
Realistically, the truth is people in other countries have problems with wolves eating their dogs (Some have posted here about it) because wolf populations are high. You think opinions are bad about wolves now, wait until Fifi becomes a dinner snack for a wolf!
Am I advocating hunting? Is there another way to keep them out of the city where 99.8% of people hate, or at the VERY BEST, fear them terribly? There probably is, but people would much rather kill them.
I am the last person, who, having a wolf who loves me-would want to see *any* wolf hurt. The fact is, wolves have a purpose-that purpose is to hunt, and reproduce, which is what they do, until you look out of your backyard and you see one.
From there, it's a matter of time before people either start feeding it, or shooting at it. People simply do not know how to handle a wolf being so close to them. (And consequently, a wolf does not know how to handle people! They are aloof, but curious.) God's honest truth is that if you see a wolf in the wild, even in your backyard-chances are you are in next to 0 danger.
In the wild, virtually all animals know better than to hurt people (it's in the Bible), they would rather you just leave them alone.
If you look at it realistically, a *lot* of people are injured or killed by wolves' prey every year. The sad fact is that people think of it backwards-that deer are harmless and wolves are vicious man-eaters. Neither is true.
I knew this was coming. It's awful tot think about-so I don't. But if they aren't culled, when you start seeing articles on how so and sos dog was eaten (If my dog was eaten I'd be livid, too-but then again I'd protect him) expect the public to go from uncaring or fearful to out and out outraged.
Expect lots of poaching, lots of thrill killing, to get back the wolf or wolves responsible. Would you rather see people hunt them with a license, one at a time, or people wipe out an entire pack with a group of snowmobiles, because they read about how Fido got eaten and were afraid for their dog (And livid at the wolves, who probably had nothing to do with it?)?
Am I a wolf lover? Yes. I would take a bullet for Mishomi. Think that's nuts? Well, I would. I would fight for the wolves at WMS, no problem. But do you have a better solution, now that there is a "healthy" population of wolves in sight? Fence them in? Fence them out? ($$$$$$$$$) That opens a huge can of worms. Audio suppression? Maybe. But right now, the truth is, there is no other option at this point.
I wish the public knew what I knew about wolves, but people just don't want to listen and usually truly do not care.
